Construction Information

All roadway work will be coordinated with the construction of the Obama Presidential Center and will be done in phases to minimize the inconvenience for neighborhood residents, park users, and motorists. See below for an overview of construction staging and schedule, as well as impacts to park access, traffic, and transit.

Phases

Construction of the transportation improvements will be broken into three Phases:

  • Phase 1 will focus on work north of 64th Street

  • Phase 2 will focus on work south of 64th Street

  • Phase 3 will focus on pedestrian underpasses south of 64th Street

Note that Phase 2 will include the permanent landscaping for both the Phase 1 and Phase 2 construction areas. Phase 2 will also include the permanent architectural features that will adorn the new pedestrian underpass structures installed during Phase 1.

Schedule

Construction on the Transportation Improvements project started early 2022.

Park Access

The project continues to maintain community access to trails, Chicago Park District buildings, ball fields, golfing, and parking lots during construction. The parking lot at 1987 E. Hayes Drive has been fully reopened to the public. When needed, pedestrian detour routes with wayfinding signs will be implemented to guide residents and park users around sidewalk, path, and roadway closures in the park.

Traffic Impacts

The scheduling of construction work has been carefully planned in order to minimize inconvenience to the traveling public. Lane closures and temporary road closures will be limited to non-peak daytime hours for the remaining duration of Phase 1 work along Stony Island Avenue, DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Hayes Drive, and some intersecting roadways within the project limits. Street parking and pedestrian access has been largely reopened to the public, except for areas directly adjacent to ongoing Obama Presidential Center (OPC) construction.

All CTA bus routes in and around Jackson Park have been maintained during construction. Some temporary bus stop relocations will continue to accommodate remaining CDOT and OPC construction activities.
